  • Describe in detail what your Organisation does:

Imbali Visual Literacy Project is a non-profit organisation involved in crafts training and skills development for youth and women from disadvantaged backgrounds. This ultimately leads to job creation opportunities and economic empowerment for these individuals. Imbali is also involved in teacher development for arts and culture teachers.
Imbali is one of the only craft training providers registered with the CATHS SETA offering accredited training. Imbali is based in Newtown (Johannesburg), but works all over Gauteng and in a number of other provinces in South Africa. Imbali runs full-time and part-time programmes, short courses, and special projects in a range of arts and culture areas.

29 years

  • In your opinion, what has been the most challenging aspect of running your Organisation?

Securing enough funding to run optimally. Marketing, making good contacts with business and the public. Supporting our students in the many challenges they face in their lives from interpersonal issues, housing, transport, food etc.

Sustained Organisational funding over a 5 year period so we can really build our programmes and expand into other provinces.

Always be professional, always treat everyone who walks through your door respectfully, never give up.

Over the years Imbali has developed into a professional training provider, offering very high quality training to the poorest of the poor, people who cannot pay fees. The products the are made as part of out training programme have improved tremendously over time to the point that we now get overseas orders.
